Transmission Tower

Setting Up Transmission Towers (Developing Lives)

Electricity is the backbone in this constantly developing world. It propels life forward at an alarming velocity. The evolution of various uses of electricity takes place every day as new phenomena are discovered to make it serve society more.

The Fundamentals

The term ‘transmission tower’ refers to tall steel structures that are used to hold up power lines that run overhead. High voltage DC and AC systems use transmission lines. There are different types of towers for different kinds of current. They are also classified into four different categories- transposition, suspension, tension and terminal. The erection of these towers takes into consideration carefully calculated parameters. A slight miscalculation can lead to disasters. The engineers must take into account accidents caused due to lightening and other changes in the environment, and create safety measurements to prevent it. The most commonly used materials for construction are lattices, tubular steel wood, and concrete. Of course, there are more sophisticated designs that require special materials for construction to ensure feasibility and safety.

Methods of Construction

The Helicopter Erection Method

This method is used during fast construction. A fully constructed tower is lowered by a helicopter on to the construction territory. It is then fastened with tacks and bolts to secure it to the ground. Another way to erect it would also be to assemble each stage of the tower part by part on the ground using the helicopter.

Section Method

The opposite sections of the tower are assembled first. Then with the help of a crane they are lifted and positioned together on the anchors. While one side is erected, the other side must be held together so that it does not dissemble. Then diagonals are used to tie up both the opposite sections.

Buildup Method

This is the most commonly used method in India. Here an erection sequence is designed to arrange the parts of transmission tower, so that no part goes missing during the vital construction period. The tower is then assembled together with each member. It is the cheapest means of construction as no expensive machinery is required.

Ground Assembly Method

The construction of the tower in this method takes place on the ground. After each part is assembled on a horizontal plane, it is lifted up by a tower and erected at the site of construction. This method cannot be undertaken for the construction of large towers. According to statistics it is the least used method in India.

Foundation

The foundation of the tower is the most important stage. The soil of the construction site must be taken into account while laying the foundation. Moreover, it is very essential to appropriately set up the stub and lay concrete. The soil is categorized into normal soil, wet soil and rocky soil. The foundation can be classified into fully submerged type, normal type, wet type and partially submerged type.

The above report details only a fraction of tower construction. The government relies on trustworthy companies that take extreme precautions to carry out the work.
