Overhead Power Lines

Importance and Maintenance of Overhead Power Lines

You remember old times? When there was no electricity, no power supply in many parts of our country, or maybe you have heard stories from your parents about how they used to manage without power that is so crucial today. We might have forgotten the importance of power supply in this world of comfort and ease where you can use your Wi-Fi and do things at one click of your finger, but still it is important to appreciate whatever electricity and things related to it have done for us.

What are overhead power lines and what are they made of?

When you drive through the highways, you must have seen the humongous structures connected to each other with cables and wires, a place where birds relax when they are tired of flying. Those are the structures connecting highways to the cities bringing the electricity everywhere in the country.

Every overhead power line structure is different in design, shape, and size. But every line has some important parts and without them it cannot work.

Conductors

Conductors are the most important part of a power line that are generally made of aluminum which, by the way, is a good conductor of electricity offering a resistance equivalent to a copper conductor but at a cheaper price.

Insulators

Insulators are present in these power lines to support the conductors and withstand normal operating voltage as well as the fluctuation in voltage and in case of lightening. Insulators are made of silicon and rubber.

Ground wires

Another important part of overhead power lines are the ground wires aka earthed wires, these are installed in the ground between two structures, and they are used to minimize the damage when lightning strikes.

Overhead insulated conductor cables

They are not an integral part of the system but are still used to cover short distances (generally less than 1 km). These cables work as a conductor and an insulator at the same time eliminating the use of extra insulating wires.

Construction of these structures is itself a challenge as these structures will be transferring potential of 765,000 Volts in some cases. Also, there can be no commercial and residential buildings anywhere near these structures. But the biggest challenge begins after the construction is finished; the maintenance of these power lines requires skilled labor and patience. A small error in the lines will create electricity problems throughout the city which no one wants. There are very few companies present in Australia that have mastered in these projects.

One such company that has been serving since 1984 is Rigging Construction Pty Ltd. We have proved our excellence in maintenance of transmission line assets, all phases of high voltage transmission line construction, erection of telecom towers and associated equipment, railway overheads systems and overhead power lines.
